The Origin of Dedication

For the Arizona Sustainability Alliance (AZSA), the conservation journey began with a resounding commitment to the environment. While our Adopt-A-Park (AAP) initiative officially debuted in 2021, its soul was shaped long before. North Mountain Park’s rich biodiversity and environmental significance were an evident starting point. The Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Areas became another essential location to channel our energies as our efforts evolved.

Planting the First Seed

In 2019, a novel initiative emerged from AZSA’s ideation sessions: Help-A-Farm (HAF). While the name succinctly expressed its core objective, the depth of the project was far-reaching. With its numerous farms, South Phoenix was the ideal platform to cultivate community spirit and sustainability.

Moments of Triumph

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with more than 230 passionate volunteers. Together, we’ve conducted cleanup drives, initiated invasive species removal programs, and championed the beautification of these pivotal Phoenix parks. These endeavors, reflected in the 750 accumulated volunteer hours, resonate in the restored habitats and rejuvenated local flora and fauna.

Challenges: Lessons in Resilience

Like any venture, our journey has been full of hurdles. The weather and volunteer turnout have put our resolve to the test. But with each challenge, AZSA has emerged more vigorous, determined, and ever-evolving.

The Road Ahead

Our aspirations extend far beyond the borders of the parks we currently serve. We’ve recently welcomed new staff volunteer for both parks: Ashley Lucas. Make sure to give her a warm welcome at our next AAP. This enhancement aims to engage more with the parks, engage with local communities, and continue building environmental curricula in schools and classrooms across Phoenix.

Adopt-A-Park’s Saturdays are active from October to April every year. We’ve established a recurring schedule of every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area and 4th Saturday at North Mountain Park, starting at sunrise for 3 hours of hands-on learning and fun. AZSA provides everything, from snacks to gloves and tools; we need you and a smile (and a friend or two!)

Sign up for our next AAP at our events page, and if you belong to an employee resource group, alumni/student club, or any other team looking to have a morning of bonding, reach out to us; we love volunteer groups!
